2009 MLB Awards Predictions

Well Opening Day is 5 days away so to keep going what Blaine started here are my MLB Award Predictions for the 2009 season:

American League Most Valuable Player: Carlos Quentin, Chicago White Sox

Quentin would have almost certainly won the award last year if he didn’t inflict a broken wrist on himself late in the season. Quentin has the ability to carry a team when the rest of the players aren’t hitting (look to 2008 White Sox), that to go along with my belief the award should go to the most valuable player instead of the best player, puts Quentin right in the discussion for the MVP this year. He also has the stats to get into the argument about being the best player in the American League, but he is certainly one of the most valuable pieces to a team’s chances in all of baseball.

National League Most Valuable Player:
Manny Ramirez, Los Angeles Dodgers

Manny Ramirez, much like Carlos Quentin is extremely valuable to his team. Without him, the Dodgers won’t have much of a chance to win the NL West. Sure Ramirez is controversial, but there is no denying when he wants to be, he can be one of the best, if not, the best player in baseball. He is an amazing hitter with one of the best eyes in the game, his defense is above average (ESPN likes to blow his defensive antics out of proportion…shocker I know), and he is a great teammate to have.

American League Cy Young: Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays

Halladay is the most consistent pitcher there is in baseball today, and he also is doing this while pitching in one of the hardest divisions to pitch in. He will constantly throw complete games, even 10 innings if it is needed, and he has the stats to back up his case for Cy Young. Halladay will be looked upon a lot this year to stop losing streaks and he will be the one time (possibly two times) a week the Blue Jays can confidently believe they will win that game. He will also get the award over guys like John Lackey or Felix Hernandez due to the fact he pitched the whole season in the AL East and had to face the Rays, Red Sox, and Yankees more than any other team in the league.

National League Cy Young:
Johan Santana, New York Mets

Santana much like Halladay will get the award due to his performance in a heavy offensive division. If Santana is healthy this season, he will be a major factor in getting the Mets back to the post season. He has the ability to just dominate every fifth day and give his team the best opportunity to win. His stuff is just filthy and I have a feeling he will just dominate all year long.

We'll Have the previews for each team coming in the next day or so followed by our predictions for division winners and the World Series winner.
